SEBASTIAN + BARQUET SOUTHAMPTON 2012
Opening August 11th, designer and artist Madeline Weinrib will present a new month-long exhibit at the Southampton location of New York-based gallery Sebastian + Barquet, showcasing landmark mid-century furnishings re-imagined through Weinrib’s intricate handwoven textiles and vibrant palette.
Marking Weinrib’s second show with the gallery, her designs for the Southampton location will bring a contemporary perspective to classic forms by Alexander Girard, Vladimir Kagan, Ico and Luisa Parisi and more.
Blurring the line between art and design, Weinrib’s work is heavily influenced by her background as a painter. Her eponymous line of textiles and carpets is created by hand using centuries-old modes of craftsmanship, simultaneously preserving traditions whilst producing unique new designs individual to Weinrib and her distinct aesthetic.
In revisiting celebrated mid-century furnishings through her layered approach and singular, contemporary lens, Weinrib’s exhibit will explore the affinities and tensions between old and new, and the relationships between color, form, and pattern. Exhibit highlights will include Gio Ponti’s iconic Leggera side chair, part of the permanent collection at MoMA, emboldened in Weinrib’s Brown Stripes ikat fabric; Vladimir Kagan’s floating Erica chaise, originally inspired by the designer’s wife, given a fittingly feminine update in Weinrib’s luxurious Lavender Egerton Jacquard; Osvaldo Borsani’s P32 lounge chair, reworked in a modern mix of Dove grey ikat fabrics; and a rare three seat sofa by Italian design duo Ico and Luisa Parisi, reinvented in Brown Stripe ikat.
